Get Fitter By Changing Your Behaviour Instead Of Going To The Gym This Summer

In these enlightened times, everyone can see the benefits of becoming fitter. We are blessed with modern medicines and so our life expectancy is good. It would be a shame to spend our senior years hunched over a walking stick. Of course, old age brings with it many problems that can’t be avoided; we just need to give ourselves the best chance we can.

Gymnasiums are opening in every town and city and are big business now. Being a member of the local gym has almost become a status symbol for the young and healthy. It is quite expensive, however, so not all of us can afford to take out a membership.

If you feel that, for one reason or another, a gym membership isn’t right for you, there are things you can do for yourself that are guaranteed to increase your fitness levels and give you a better chance for a healthy old age. Here are a few ways you can help yourself this summer, instead of going to the gym.

Quit Smoking

Any doctor, and anyone suffering with COPD will tell you that the one thing anyone can do to improve their health and lengthen their life, is to give up the fags. It is a no-brainer, and everyone knows it. Everyone seems to think that the worst will never happen to them, but it does in the end. Very few smokers get off scot free compared to those that suffer serious and life-threatening illnesses.

So, you can stop smoking, and there is plenty of help out there once you decide the time is right for you. The latest aid on the market is the electronic cigarette. These can be found at LastCig.co.uk and many other places online. They work by vaporizing a solution that you then inhale. There are many solutions available, and they may contain nicotine at different strengths. This new invention helps to manage the habit of smoking, while providing nicotine to help with cravings, and removing the other harmful chemicals found in cigarettes.

Of course, there are those of you who will be able to quit cold turkey; kudos to you. Smoking is undoubtedly one of the hardest addictions to break.

Buy a Dog

Getting a dog will help you to change your sedentary behaviour by giving you an excuse to go out for a walk. Ideally you will take the dog out for an hour at least twice a day. You need to break your lazy routine and replace it with more activity.

The Stairs

If you are a television addict, exercise id still within your grasp. Almost every channel shows commercials at the same time now, so there is no benefit in trying to turn the TV over when they start. Every time the commercials start, get up and head for the stairs. Walk up and down the stairs at a steady pace until you hear your program start again. This is a great aerobic exercise and an awesome way to avoid the ads.

Improving your health and fitness needn’t cost a fortune. In fact, cutting down or quitting smoking will save you a great deal of money. No-one is pretending this will be easy; you are probably in for a two year battle before smoking is completely off your mind, but it is worth it when looking back. Take it from one who knows.
